Lasik is a surgical procedure used to correct vision defects using a laser, so that a person need not wear eyeglasses or contact lenses. Lasik is an acronym for Laser Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis and is used to correct myopia and other eye defects . This is a new surgical technique, developed in 1990, so long term effects of this surgery are not known. Lasik surgery is expensive and not covered by medical insurance

During lasik surgery, an excimer laser is used to change the shape of  the cornea in front of the eye, so that the patient can see properly. A flap is cut in the cornea using a knife called a microkeratome. This flap is folded back , to expose the middle  section of  the cornea known as stroma. Laser pulses then vaporize part of  the stroma, so that the refractive error in the eye is corrected. The flap is then replaced and heals after some time. Patients are usually given antibiotics and eye drops. Goggles are to be worn for protection against bright light for a few weeks.

Lasik surgery cannot be performed on persons who are less than 18 years old. Also there should be no change in the prescription of contact lenses or glasses in the last one year . Usually the prescription number changes gradually for teenagers and persons in their early twenties and then stabilizes. If  any eye surgery has been performed on the eye, Lasik surgery cannot be carried out again. Certain autoimmune diseases and drug may cause slow healing after surgery.

Like all surgical procedures, Lasik surgery has some amount of risk. About 3 to 6 % of patients have reported problems even 6 months after the treatment. Some patients may not be able to see properly after the surgery. Not all patients attain perfect vision, you may still need contact lenses or glasses. The eyes may not be able to produce enough tears resulting in the dry eye problem. The skill of the surgeon is also important, especially in countries where there are few laws to curb medical malpractices .
